Margit Ilika

February 18 - March 18

Margit Ilika earned a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from the Universidad de las Américas, A.C. in Puebla, Mexico. Margit spent well over 20 years living in Mexico and moved back to Bryan when her father became ill. She raised her three children, Josh, Katy, and Joseph here in Bryan. Margit has taught painting, printmaking, color design, art history as well as bilingual education in Pre-K and Kindergarten.

Margit Ilika is a full time artist since and primarily a collage artist in mixed media. She is mostly interested in upcycling materials such as furniture and printed pictures which are often discarded, which she likes to call “found art”. She takes these pieces and puts her own rendition on them using a variety of paints and colors. She has been a collage artist since 1969.

Taken from her autobiography description, “I am an easel painter. I use collage because it allows me to position together images, ideas, colors so as to multitask ideas, I consider images to be ideas, collage is a recycle of images as well as paper.”

Margit is still an avid painter at her home here in Bryan TX. Unfortunately she has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has started treatments and recently underwent surgery but she has a long road to recovery ahead. Her family has been by her side every step of the way and will continue to be. As you can imagine, the financial burden and medical bills will add up very quickly. Any purchases of her art on display here, will go directly to her to help with the finances and treatments that lie ahead.

On behalf of her children, Josh, Katy, and Joseph, we wish to thank you for taking the time to come see her work and purchasing. The B/CS area is a great community and it means a lot to us to have this support.

With hope in our heart, strength in our soul, and the determination to beat cancer, our mom will be a breast cancer SURVIVOR!
